Planning that long awaited holiday can be fun and exciting! Unfortunately, it also comes with a fair amount of stress. Choosing your destination, accommodation, etc. needs careful decision making to ensure a pleasant outcome. One of the most important aspects of the planning process will be making the most suitable holiday accommodation booking online.
There are a number of factors to take into account when you choose your accommodation. Here are a few:
Factors to Consider When Selecting Holiday Accommodation
Number of People in Your Travel Party
The number of people in your travel group will determine the type of accommodation best suited to your group.
A hotel may be less suited for a big travel group, who may be better matched in a self-catering holiday home. Several rooms at a high cost will certainly be less economical than a large house with a fully fitted kitchen where meals can be prepared together.
Budget, Budget, Budget
As soon as you have a clear idea about the size of your travel group, a budget will be crucial.
Compare accommodation prices, not only in terms of daily price but also including value for money, ie. what is included in the accommodation fee. Check the accommodation’s value for money by considering the facilities (washing machine, towels, etc) and amenities included in the reservation fee.
Look for special package deals and be sure to visit potential listings’ websites to compare their fees to those on booking sites.
Length of Stay
Another important factor, since lengthy stays will need good rates AND convenience – a home away from home.
Amenities such as laundry and kitchen/self catering facilities will be preferable.
Check in and Check Out Times
If you’re aiming to arrive or depart at your accommodation at an irregular hour, either very early or very late, it may be best suited to choose more formal accommodation such as a hotel. At the very least, in such circumstances, accommodation with a 24 hour reception desk will be far better suited.
Guesthouses, holiday homes and B&B’s usually have set check in and check out times. The main reason for this is that they don’t have 24 hour reception desks like their more formal counterparts.
Late arrivals therefore often come with an additional late check in fee, while early check ins are not readily available.
Cancellation Policy
Life is pretty unpredictable at times and a change in plan can happen unexpectedly. Make sure that you consider accommodation that offers a flexible cancellation policy.
Most accommodation establishments are currently open to offering at least 2 to 3 date changes and even free cancellation. Don’t take it for granted though, do your research and be certain that the cancellation fee matches your travel needs.
Self Catering vs Bed and Breakfast
Lengthy stays and large groups may be better suited in self catering accommodation.
A kitchen or kitchenette will be far cheaper in the long run, since self prepared meals will reduce daily travel costs.
Check the Reviews
Guest reviews and especially their photos are crucial to check. Although not all reviews are unbiased and accurate, you will get a feel for the overall experience most guests enjoyed (or not!). Make sure that guests’ pictures correspond with pictures shared on accommodation websites.
Location
Make sure you know exactly where you want to spend the majority of your time while you’re at your holiday destination. There’s no point in booking cheaper accommodation, but the distance to the main attractions results in additional expenses.
Consider the distance between the airport or bus terminal if you’re using public transport. Take into account whether the accommodation offers a shuttle service or if you’ll have to pay a hefty Uber or taxi fee.
Consider the Amenities Offered
Value for money is always a key factor when making an accommodation booking. Consider what the amenities are that will be included in the booking tariff, etc. gym, pool, etc.
